A popular team is the Lakers so it is safe to say I know the faces of most of the team members and a few names in addition.

I was familiar with who D.J. Mbenga was on court but not off court as in where he is from and all that including how funny he really is.
Anyways I stumbled on the Jimmy Kimmel show last night and about 9 members of the L.A. Lakers team were on the show including Kobe, Fisher, Ariza, Gasol and Mbenga.
At some point the whole team was ribbing Mbenga on his accent; thats no problem, infact it looked like the whole team was friendly with each other and you know how guys tease each other, it was fun to watch.

But what confused me was when Jimmy Kimmel mentioned that he would like to hire Mbenga as a security guard on the show. Now I know he was being funny but I am hesistant to say stereotypical because I didnt know Africans were known to be security guards more than any other race?! On the other hand, I felt it was a bit confusing to mention that you wanted to hire him as a security guard because you didnt understand his accent or because he was funny?! I could be wrong, there might be no relationship but when I heard it, I frowned without even blinking and the rest of the interview I was a little angry at the statement.

I think I was more upset because I found Mbenga to be cute, charming, funny and seemingly a sweetheart. Had Kimmel said it to Lebron, I might not have cared. Anyways below is a clip of the interview, it starts at 8.25 if you can determine what he meant let me know and I will stand corrected.

With that said it was a completely entertaining interview especially for someone like me; I find the interviews more interesting than the actual game.lol

Well have a wonderful fathers day and God bless all our dads! I am concerned though that it might be a trend and like all trends, fade with time but if you put your own personal spin on it, you might be able to get away with it in any season.

It can work with most shapes. For instance, due to the multiple layers of fabric, a slimmer figure can acquire a fuller-looking figure and still be able to pull off the look successfully with a belted version to give the illusion of curves.
However, actually fuller figures might need to find a balance because those multiple layers of fabric can add bulk as opposed to flattering the figure; I wouls suggest a corsetted top and a full skirt(sort of like Linda's version).
The right style to rock would depend on one's figure and the occasion. A midriff-baring saree might not be generally appropriate for all occasions but thankfully there are lots of ways to wear it and still look elegant. You just have to make sure it works for you. The great thing is you can wear it with a longer top underneath to avoid showing too much skin. I love the idea of wearing it like a one-shoulder wrap, completely covered all over the body but still figure flattering at the same time with the extra fabric draped on your arm or alternatively pinned on your shoulder.

How to wear a Saree

Wrap Saree

Linda Ikeji in a Saree from her collection, see this blog post

If you have it, flaunt it.

How not to wear a Saree

Peace,Love and fabulousness

Blog Challenged-there is such a thing!

Ok I have been a blogger for a little over a year and today I am wondering why no one ever told me about 'following' a blog. Below is an interview he did with CNN shortly after the settlement.

(CNN) -- Ken Saro-Wiwa Jr., the son of executed Nigerian writer Ken Saro-Wiwa, spoke exclusively to CNN's Becky Anderson about Shell's $15.5 million payout to settle a lawsuit accusing the oil giant of complicity in the deaths of Saro-Wiwa and other activists. Following is a transcript of the interview.
Q: What does this settlement mean to you and the other plaintiffs?
A: Well, I think in the end it enables us to draw a line under the past and actually face the future with something tangible, some hope that this is the beginning of a better engagement between all the stakeholders in this issue.
Q: Would your father have been pleased do you think?
A: Yes, I think he was always a pragmatic kind of guy, someone who was always insistent that individuals should serve the collective at every point, and I think this is something that speaks to that.
Q: Why did you settle?
A: Because it offered the opportunity, as I said, to draw a line under the past so that we can move on with our lives and you have to remember there are 10 people involved in this plaintiff, all with varying experiences and aspirations.

For the rest of this interview, click on the link below.

http://edition.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/africa/06/09/saro-wiwa.transcript/

Fashion Review - Genevieve Magazine Pink Ball

The popular magazine had its annual Pink Ball which highlights breast cancer awareness. A very playful, young choice for the evening. Loves it!

This is a very appropriate cocktail dress for the evening. I love the delicate pink, the beautiful fabric and the fit is awesome on her figure. I'm out on the shoes however.

The dress is a bit 80's but I'm all for vintage only where appropriate and i don't think this is appropriate for a ball and the hair is not really complementing. Either way beautiful lady, lovely skin.

I absolutely love Uche Jumbo but unfortunately she does not score any points with this piece. The sunglasses, jewelry and the shoes do not complement. Take them away and cinch the waist and it would have shown off her figure in a more flattering way.
Having said that, Uche still rocks as a fab lady and talented actress!

And for the men.

Governor Gbenga Daniel(middle) does a fabulous job of looking classic and well put together.

Dayo Adeneye pulls off a comfortable look in his suit and white bowtie.

To pull off the "sneakers n suit" look, I think you need to have swagger and confidence and I think singer Sunny Nneji kind of pulls it off. What do you think?

Finally, I think Segun Arinze pulls this off quite nicely and his wife looks very beautiful.

Stay fab!

Met's Costume Institute Gala - New York City

Okay this past weekend was the "Oscars of Fashion" in New York City so naturally all your fave celebrities came out dressed up and below are my picks, best and worst dressed.

Rihanna went Avant-Garde to me and although I don't love, love it, I definitely think its a good "comeback" outfit. Perfect place, good statement.

Ciara's look i love, love! The backless statement is fabulous! She looks in great shape andI would love that outfit for me! lol. I also like the clean, beautiful hairstyle that is not over the top and lets the dress do the talking.

Tyra did tyra. Outrageous and borders on mortisha from adams family! down to the facial expression lol but I love that she took a risk. No better occassion to take risks than at the "Oscars of fashion". I love taking risks with fashion, if you must-make sure you are comfortable in your own skin so it doesnt come off as crazy.

And Tyra is confidence!

NowKanye's Amber - The only problem for me is I do not particularly believe in matching lipstick to the color of your dress. All together no surprise there with Amber, I kind of know what to expect with her fashion-wise since she came on the scene.

Beautiful Ladies-Iman and Eva did gold silk and they looked fabulous, no risks there just beautiful dresses that showed off their curves nicely.

Worst dressed hands down - Madonna, I mean most of us love the material girl but what was she thinking?

Stay fab!

Weekend fab

Hey guys,

My Weekend fab is as follows:

Tech-Fab: I recently got this new laptop which embodies the idea of style meets business, kind off where Im at and it has been fabolous-I highly recommend it! You will be hearing more about it and ofcourse your questions and comments are welcome.

This collection- AFROFAB-is about going back to the heritage of who we are as women and doing it fabulously. It is an inspiration of African fabrics fused with contemporary creativity. You can look great anywhere in the world in one of my pieces. No longer do we have to keep our fabrics, our beauty in a box that says "pre-approved structure or design".

Point is I will always be inspired by where I am from- Ghana, Nigeria - Africa and that inspiration and passion bubbles at the surface and I cannot keep it at bay any longer. I have always wanted the world to see and appreciate the beauty that I see and I guess being a designer is inately who I am because I feel I am able to create art out of what I already consider beautiful.

I look at my label as wearable art and I thank God for that creativity he put in me. I look forward to people wearing clothes from my collection and looking & feeling beautiful, comfortable and fabulous.

Peace, Love & Fabulousness

Kizi

Candids - Collin Powell and Olu Maintain

Former US Secretary of State, Collin Powell, attended the Africa Rising Festival in London and hit the stage (dancing!) with performer Olu Maintain. I have been busy tying up 'loose ends' lol. The line will include jewelry, t-shirts and actual, classic fashion all designed by moi. I have always been of the creative nature and my family knows that so when I told them about it, they weren't too surprised but the response has been positive so far and I am just believing in God for the strength to keep pushing.

A little info about the label
I have a name for the label-jewelry,t-shirts and fashion but I want to wait a little bit before releasing that for some reasons. I like to have everything ready, thats just the way I do things but anyway pretty soon.
The fashion line is a collection of dresses and other pieces made from 'all-over-Africa'-n fabrics and the inspiration for my designs is really the fabrics themselves with the colors and durability that accompanies authentic African fabrics and I am very interested in repping my continent, my countries-Ghana and Nigeria-so all that contributed to my wanting to start this in the first place.
The jewelry line is similar to the fashion line because it is classic pieces and stones that can add 'oomph' to any outfit, jeans and a tank for instance.
The t-shirt line consists of pure cotton and organic African cotton t-shirts designed by myself with the inspiration behind that being "Comfortable Expression". This is the key behind my t-shirts because each uniquely designed t-shirt appeals to each unique individual and the base material is extremely comfortable.

So I have been absent due to all this and expect a fashion show to showcase all these coming up (in houston tho). Also expect pics soon.

One more thing, don't be afraid to follow your dreams, no matter how outrageous or 'done before' they may seem, yours could be the dream everyone has been waiting on just like America has been waiting on someone like Barack Obama. (Just had to plug that in). Believe in yourself and God will handle the rest.

Peace. Love and fabulous things.

Chicago, Ghita and all things sweet!

Happy 4th of July!..a day after. I hope you did fill up on some good food/fireworks.

Anyways I promised to return with a blog about Chicago and one of my favorite labels, Ghita by Alexis Phifer.

Chicago

I went to the Windy city to see one of my best friends and shout out to her for making sure I had a wonderful time. 1 star out of 5 for her..lol.

If you have never been, you have to at some point. Wherever you are, out of the US, make it your stop on the way in; within the US, look for a cheap ticket on a weekend. What I did like about the place was the downtown scene, from the shopping street corners with designers like Coach, Armani, Louis Vuitton and more to the food....ah the food, the pizza was awesome, best ever and I am so not a pizza-eating person but they won me over! Lots to do and for that I give the city of Chicago 4 stars out of 5.

Ghita

This label was launched by Alexia Phifer in 2005 and has since seen a growth in popularity and availability. I especially liked the Spring 2008 collection with the brights and whites and she is impressing the fashion world yet again with the Fall 2008 collection with a lot of ruching which in another time may have been a bit much but she does it with the style and experience of a seasoned designer and one cannot help but love that. The color palette is naturally Fall with metallic grays, tans, yellows and pale pink. There is a grecian element to this particular collection and that adds a touch of elegance and dangerously borders on 'done before' but like a pro she takes you to a completely different familiar place. For the fall 08 collection, Ghita gets a 4 out of 5 stars.

I love the "barely-pink" color of this piece

The mix of brown/tan/white is fabulously done

So these are a few of my favorite pieces of the Ghita 08 collection. Let me update you...You see even republicans know whats up. They know that Barack Obama is intelligent and charismactic but they have refused to accept that he is the next president of the United States of America and so they have tried to shut him down in all ways but to no avail.
Well TIME magazine has made it loud and clear, he is going to be the Democratic nominee and in my very educated and precise opinion, the next president of the USA.
For me it is a black AND African issue because no African American man has ever come this far and he is just that-African AND American. This is monumental! It really is. He cannot come this far and be turned away, we all need to finish what we started. People always saying black people are being kept down well Look up! That person there is a black man standing up for you and I! I believe with Barack Obama, the doors that we presumed were shut or that were actually shut would cease to exist in our minds and in reality. Yes We Can!

Commit to Change+p-square and more

Two things happened this past week; what many expected would be the only truthful outcome turned out not to be and Rev. Wright kept on preaching. I am talking about the verdict on the Sean Bell case tragedy and Rev. Wright continously speaking out for America and the world to commit to change.

Sean bell was in a car the night before his wedding when 3 undercover police officers felt their lives were in danger and pumped what was believed to be 50+ bullets into the car Killing Bell. After 'the smoke settled down', Bell was dead and there were no weapons on him or in the car.

Now think about that for a second.....

Understandably, the family is devastated, they lost a son, a father, .........a fiance; few things are worse. But also at this point, we have to think about what next. Can they take it to the Supreme Court, Ask for a retrial? Surely everyone realizes this affected more than just the Bell family and it is so beyond race because 2 of the 3 policemen are black. The issue here is police over-brutality-plain and simple and in most cases, strereotyping.

So write to your senators, government or write on your blog. Let us unite in asking that police refrain and retrain; go back to the cutting board and raise inspiring policemen not men who unfortunately go down in history for cutting down the life of an innocent human being.

There are bad people out there who pose great risks for our policemen and women but we can't forget that on November 25, 2006, we were left with one less good man.

Rev. Wright is on to something and from my own inference, he is saying we should all move towards accepting people from all different ethnic groups and races. What is wrong with that? The only thing he may have to think about is his speech sounding a bit like he is condemning a certain race. Encourage people to do whats right and leave it at that.

Check out music from P-Square!
Enjoy!

P-Square_Story: I love this song and vid!

P-Square_No one like u.

Wande Coal_Ololufe

Ololufe

loves the third song, not so crazy about the video.

Simple but fab skin and make-up

These are tips on skin care and makeup gathered from lots of different types of people, friends, myself included and you just have to find what works for you. I learnt something years ago; perfect skin equals perfect makeup but unfortunately there is no perfect skin but fortunately there are perfect solutions and there is flawless makeup. Each individual is different so naturally the skin care regimen will be different and honestly the drugstore type things are less complicated and usually work and the expensive things mess with your skin.

Let me start with types of skin, I have combination skin (note I didn’t say perfect skin but I’m pretty close!) and that is oily in some parts and dry in other areas. It is personally the hardest skin type to care for because of the obvious confusion of areas lol. But I also have sensitive skin so that has worked in my favor because I cannot use anything overly aggressive anyway so that helps with the combination/confusion. Try Aveeno gentle scrub once a week or any Aveeno product, love them! Or you can alternate between care for dry skin and oily skin and for really sensitive skin try Cetaphil.

Next skin type is dry skin. If you were born with dry skin, you might want to find a very good moisturizer for day and night and if you suddenly developed dry skin, check your cleanser. Using scrubs too often usually have a dual effect; they could either dry out your skin or make it super oily.

Oily skin is often associated with build up of a cleanser especially if it is cream based and as we all know build up of oil could lead to acne. I would suggest a mask or deep scrub once a week and change your cleanser and/or moisturizer to oil-free. If everything checks out just work with it until you find something that’s works for you, it does not happen overnight.

For the body, any Aveeno product or dove product. Most of the skin is usually covered up (except when we show off our legs!) so that’s why it is not as high maintenance as our face, neck and probably arms. Basically, any body cleanser would work but I love Bath and Body Works shower gels; they have soaps too that are wonderful if you don’t like shower gels. And for that head to toe glow, try a body scrub once a week, your bathing suit reflection will love you for it.

Makeup
There is this wonderful concealer stick by L’oreal. Concealers should be used to cover skin discoloration patches and also to highlight eyes because eye makeup looks great on a lighter base. The colors pop and it just looks better.

I’m not a foundation chic, tried it, not for me but if it works for you that’s cool too. The thing about foundation for me is the heaviness feel and if I did use it, I probably wouldn’t use it everyday.
Matching your exact color to your makeup powder can be very tricky, if you still haven’t found you match, try mixing two color lines where you obviously fall. For instance my sister could mix a 43 and 45 because 43 is a little too light on her and 45 is a little too dark. Black is beautiful and unique. With the different shades in this beautiful race, oftentimes makeup companies drop the ball in correctly identifying the undertones.

I am a gloss chic. Lipstick with gloss is awesome too. But to avoid looking like you had something shiny to eat at a job interview, go easy on the gloss or find a perfect shade lipstick for such demure situations.

More tips coming soon and ofcourse if you don't mind, you can share your personal beauty tips in the comment section, it just might enlight someone!

Hi everybody! I have been a little busy and I am about to let you know why and what I have been up to.

Ok so I am coming out with my very own fabulous fashion line! It kinda inspired this blog. I have been working on it for a few months now but it came to me a little while ago. I was just inspired by a lot and God put that dream in me. Since then I have been eating, sleeping and thinking this dream and I am actually now working that dream and I am so excited! My first of many collections will be out this summer (sneak peak coming soon!); it is geared towards spring/summer because usually the difference between those seasons is a sexy shawl, a cute cropped jacket or a pair of fabulously tailored pants.

The thing about dreaming is the possibility. When you believe all of a sudden that you can actually accomplish something, when you believe in yourself all of a sudden, the feeling is amazing because it’s a natural high no one can or should be able to bring you down from.

There might be setbacks, heck there will be setbacks but it’s meant to set you on a different path to that destination, not leave you back permanently.
There will also be people who might not think you have what it takes to accomplish your dream; don’t worry, let their negativity be your motivation. Also stay away from them! Lol.

The key to moving forward from just any dream to reality is seeing it in writing. When I first thought of doing this, I grabbed a piece of paper in a rush and I didn’t stop writing till 6 am the following morning. What was I writing? Everything that I would do, everything I wanted to do with regards to this dream. I decided that night what my line would be about (can’t say right now but I’ll let you know soon, I promise), the look I would be going for and why exactly my blood was racing through my body. I could not contain my excitement; it was spilling over and still is. That brings me to another key point; love what you do, be passionate about what you do. For example if you love cars please do not go into the business of restaurant and hospitality and the reason is this; there will be hard times and you want to be able to stick around because of your passion for what you are doing. There is only so much money can do because people have left high paying jobs to follow their dreams and that leads me to another key. Do not go quitting your high paying job because you may need to finance it yourself!

Most important, trust God who put that dream in you and believe in yourself. If you intend on going ahead with what you have always dreamed of doing, I’m not going to sugar-coat anything, there is a lot of hard work ahead but believe me the taste of payoff makes it so worth it!

Stay fabulous!
afrofabchic

Afrofab designers

Duro Olowu
Duro Olowu is the darling of the British Fashion scene and as you will see below, he matches my loooove for prints and patterns this season. Check her out.

Down on my knees_Ayo

Without you_Ayo

Talib Kweli
Talib Kweli Greene, better known as Talib Kweli, is an American MC from Brooklyn, New York. This spring kicks off a return to accentuating your lovely waist. With wide belts, waist-flattering skirts and dresses, we are thankfully distancing ourselves from the era of low, low, low -waist everything! That trend did nothing to beautifully emphasize the waist of a woman, rather it gave her a longer than normal torso and for some it exposed what was supposed to remain underneath. Below are runway pieces to spring into. The runway picks come from one of my favorite designers, Reem Acra. The colors are not only spring and summer perfect; the pieces are flattering on any shape because they bring the whole look together at one point which is important for a beautiful, balanced look.

I am a big fan of white and black and those are classic colors but you can add a splash/contrast of color like the green wide belt in look 1 or the purple belt in look 5 or you can go all out with purple and red and still stand out beautifully. The splash/contrast of color can also be with your purse or clutch and your shoes like these from Aldo. I particularly love the ruby red flat shoes for versatility and comfort. At the same time dont be afraid to go bold!

I love this black sequined wide belt because it instantly adds a classic look to any outfit.

And finally, I love, love, love these dresses from victoriassecret.com because their colors are vibrant and ‘springy’ and they obviously accentuate the waist beautifully. Thank You for visiting my blog, afrofab.blogspot.com
This blog is going to showcase style tips, fab music, infotainment and more.
Let me tell you why I started this blog. First reason, I love to write, I write a lot about stuff and writing is so enlivening. I am a creative/artistic-type person so this blog should be fun. Second reason, I feel like in some way there are people out there I need to reach; looking fabulous is obvious, put your look together to suit your body and mind. Feeling fabulous is not so obvious at first, but once you feel fabulous, the whole world knows it! It may be working out, eating right or just plain, old, simple joy. Doing fabulous. Aha! That is the true test of being fabulous. It is doing something positive in someone’s life, doing something positive in your life, following your ‘get-outta-here’ dreams (someone ask Barack Obama about the possibility of ‘get-outta-here’ dreams!) and your doing-fabulous-definition inserted here { }. Third reason, fabulous is just another word for wonderful, magnificent, marvelous, tremendous, great, remarkable, extraordinary, amazing! Go figure!
